MEXICO — Jim Glendinning of Alpine, who has been running tours to the Copper Canyon region since 2001, announced the resumption of his trip to Batopilas in November 2017. The 7-day trip starts in Ojinaga, Chih, stops in Chihuahua City, continues by train to Creel, then drops down 3,800 feet to the bottom of Batopilas Canyon.
Glendinning said that Batopilas had been named a Magic Town by the Mexican tourism authorities. The road from Creel has been paved and a new bridge built, the plaza has been spiffed up and a zip line installed that traverses the town and the Batopilas River. “In the plaza there is a new Museum of Mining, which tells the story of silver mining”, said Glendinning, who will accompany the group.
The group will stay in the Riverside Lodge, a block long historic building, formerly the home of the owner of the company store when the mine flourished. For details: footloosescot.com or Jimglen2@sbcglobal.net.
