Sul Ross track athletes head to NCAA Division III national championships

CANYON — For the second consecutive year, the Sul Ross 4X100 men’s relay team and All-Conference long jumper Jermaine Stevens (Houston/South) will be heading to the NCAA Division III National Track and Field Championships.
This year’s three-day nationals event will be held in Geneva, Ohio May 25, 26 and 27 and hosted by Mt. Union University.
Relay members James Davis (Houston/South), Byron Jones (League City/Clear Springs), Stevens and anchor man Richard Snyder (La Vernia/LVHS) qualified for the national meet following Sunday’s second place finish of 40.52 at West Texas A&M’s Last Chance Meet. Sunday’s performance was 1.16 seconds better than April’s ASC Conference Meet time of 41.68.
The Sul Ross 4X100 was edged out by event winner Wayland Baptist University of the NAIA but defeated three NCAA Division II opponents and fellow Division III competitor Texas Lutheran for the silver.
Stevens posted a first place leap of 7.34 meters at Sunday’s qualifier meet earning him his second straight appearance at Nationals.
In the 200-meter dash, Jones finished fifth out of ten runners in a time of 21.45 while Snyder placed seventh in 21.64.
Jones and Snyder await their qualifier status in the 200 which will be released next weekend.
In the 400 meter run, Dimitri Thornton (Houston/Cypress Ridge) placed fifth but fell short of a qualifying status with a time of 50.98.
In the women’s shot put, Audrey Lozano (Van Horn/VHHS) wrapped up her freshman season at Sunday’s qualifier meet with a sixth place throw of 12.09 meters.
