MARFA — The Lady Shorthorns took a piece of the District 4AA Championship as co-champions, along with Van Horn for the 2017 season and moved into the Bi-District title game against Ira for round one of the Texas State Playoffs.
At the San Angelo Central field, the Lady Horns started off the strong with 2 strike outs and 1 put-out by young hurler, Kendra Serrano.
After holding Ira’s top six batters, Marfa was unable to plate a run and soon was bit by the error bug and allowed the Bulldogs to score 7 runs in the third inning.
With Nohely Ramirez, Serrano, Kaci Flores, Elena Hernandez, and Citlalli Sanchez putting together strong cuts on the ball, the Lady Horns were able to score 4 runs, but were unable to chip any more runs away from Ira’s 16 runs.
Coach Alferez and Vargas feel confident at the direction that the program is heading in and are optimistic with the successes this year’s team had.
After a strong season, several Lady Shorthorns earn their way onto the All-District Honors list. Representing Marfa as superlative standouts, Rebecca Ontiveros and Kendra Serrano take high honors for Marfa as Ontiveros took Offensive MVP and Serrano earned Defensive MVP for her pitching performances throughout the season.
Rounding out the First Team All-District list were catcher, Kaci Flores, Priscilla Serrano, Nohely Ramirez, and Isabella Morales. Second Team members for Marfa were Citlalli Sanchez, Elena Hernandez, and Samantha Hernandez.
The trio was relied on heavily by the Shorthorns for their defensive and offensive contributions and dependability throughout the season.
