ARLINGTON – Izabella Ornelas, a Presidio High School freshman, has been selected to participate in the 2017 Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) Summer Residential Institute at the University of Texas at Arlington.

She is the daughter of Arian Velazquez-Ornelas and Abraham Ornelas of Presidio.

The program dates are Sunday, June 4 to Saturday, July 15. UBMS is a federally funded program that offers a chance for top-quality students to experience college life, take part in activities related to their interest in math and science, and prepare for their next year in high school and beyond.

The motto of UBMS is “Knowledge for Life… Realizing Your Potential.” During the six-week program, lzabella will interact with math and science professionals, receive mentoring from university faculty, and attend classes for academic instruction from Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) college professors on campus.

The UBMS program believes that in order for the United States to remain globally competitive we must challenge and educate our youth on a level that guarantees mathematical and scientific literacy to compete in the world of tomorrow. We often hear from program alumni, praising UBMS for its role in motivating and providing tools for them to succeed in their post-secondary education and success in their careers.

Currently we have estimated over 393 former UBMS students enrolled in colleges all over the US.

In addition to rigorous math and science classes, lzabella will also attend career development workshops, cultural and educational field trips and be exposed to scientific and research experiences. Izabella will also be enrolled in courses such as literature, composition, foreign language classes and other courses that encourage self-expression.

Funded entirely by a grant from the US Department of Education, UBMS is college preparatory program for high school students with special interests and talents in math, science and engineering. Founded in 1992, the program serves students throughout the state of Texas, who are low income and/or first generation college students.
