MARFA – Marfa High School student athlete juniors Arron Luna and Jose Gallegos-Lopez placed fourth and fifth in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run, respectively, at the state UIL track finals last weekend in Austin.
Both Luna and Gallegos-Lopez posted their quickest race times of the year.
“This was my best race but I have not yet reached my peak,” Luna told the Marfa Big Bend Sentinel. “I am going for the record next year,” he added. Luna ran the 400m dash in 50.65 seconds, a personal best.
“It was fun this year,” said Gallegos-Lopez, who last competed at state in 2015 as part of the Marfa 4x400m relay alongside Luna.
“This was my first year running the 800m run and I know next year I will bring home a medal,” he added. His time of 2:03.21 seconds was also a personal best for Gallegos-Lopez.
The boys’ coach, Josh Kelly mirrored Luna’s and Gallegos-Lopez’s ambition for next year.
“The kids did great at State and I know next year they will work hard and bring home a medal to Marfa,” he said.
