BIG BEND – The Big Bend Livestock Show Association announced this week it has named its annual college scholarship the Amy Allen Memorial Scholarship.
The association raises funds throughout the year for seniors from Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties who have participated in the Big Bend show and who are planning to go to college.
Allen, who was born in Marfa and grew up in Marfa and Alpine, was a member and competitor in the Big Bend show throughout her school years in Alpine.
She went on to earn degrees from Texas Tech University and Angelo State University and was an educator for over 15 years, including a dozen years with the Midland school district.
The BBLSA Board of Directors issued the following statement, “Amy Allen exemplifies the kinds of young people who we strive to help build and support whenever we can. It is our honor that we name a scholarship after a longtime competitor who later became a dedicated educator. We can’t think of a more fitting tribute to one of our own.”
Born April 28, 1975, the daughter of Terry Jean and Dr. Ray Allen of Alpine, she died on her birthday, April 28, 2017.
To make donations in her honor for the scholarship program, send to BBLSA, Box 1342, Alpine, Texas 79830.
