Marfa’s softball diamond girls are seasoned players

MARFA – Play Ball!
Marfa varsity softball kicks off its season this weekend at the Seminole Softball Tournament with a load of games at the three-day tournament. Marfa will take on Denver City at noon and Midland Lee at 3pm today, followed on Friday with Kermit at 10:30am, Seminole Gold at 3pm, and Midland Christian at 6pm. The final match-up will be on Saturday against Seminole at 1:30pm.
The Lady Shorthorns bring back the bulk of their team with sophomore and 2016 Co-MVP Kendra Serrano, and 2016 Newcomer of the Year Kaci Flores leading Marfa’s defensive game.
Marfa’s offensive leaders last year included seniors Shelby Martinez and Priscilla Serrano, and junior Rebecca Ontiveros. The trio led Marfa in RBIs and on base percentage.
Second Team All-District members Lexi Marquez and Nohely Ramirez are also returning, with Marquez, a sophomore, putting forth strong offensive performances in the playoffs along with, senior outfielder, Ramirez.
Brielle Gonzales returns for Marfa as an outfielder, with several new faces joining the squad. Bella Morales, Elena Hernandez, Citlalli Sanchez, Eliana Cataño, Avery Betran, Alyssa Olvera, and Samantha Jimenez joining this year’s squad.
The Lady Shorthorns are headed by Coach Arturo Alferez and assisted by Paulo Vargas and Linda Ojeda.
Marfa’s first home game will be March 10th at Coffield Park at 5pm against the Lady Pecos Eagles.
