PRESIDIO COUNTY – A 79-year-old Odessa man was pronounced dead at the scene of a tanker truck that rolled over and burst into flames in Paisano Pass on Saturday.
According to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Roy Haney of Odessa was travelling west on U.S. 67/90 when the 2008 Kenworth truck pulling a tanker trailer left the roadway and rolled multiple times, prompting the tanker to detached from the rig.
Road conditions were clear and dry.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety public information officer Sgt. Moises Vasquez, both the tanker – carrying liquefied propane – and the truck caught fire.
The highway between Alpine and Marfa was subsequently closed from around 3pm Saturday to about 1am Sunday as hazardous materials crews cleaned the affected area. Traffic was diverted through Fort Davis.
At a Presidio County Commissioners’ Court meeting on Tuesday, Presidio County Judge Cinderela Guevara addressed the incident, adding that Haney was a driver for West Texas Gas.
County officials, she added, weren’t aware of the rollover for nearly two hours, as the accident occurred outside of cell phone range, but officials convened at the Marfa Volunteer Fire Department once notified to deal with the HAZMAT situation.
Investigation into the one-vehicle accident, Sgt. Vasquez said, is currentl
