Area livestock show sets 2014 dates

September 12th, 2013 under Education

BREWSTER, JEFF DAVIS, PRESIDIO counties – Members of the Big Bend Livestock Show Association kicked off the 2014 stock show season Monday, electing officers and setting dates for the annual Big Bend show.

Students from Jeff Davis, Brewster and Presidio counties will compete from FFA and 4H chapters in the three counties.

Show dates for 2014 will be January 9, 10 and 11 at the Alpine High School Ag facilities for the shows and the Alpine Civic Center for the annual sale.

Members also locked in the dates for the 2015 show – those will be January 8, 9 and 10 in 2015.

Judges for the 2014 show have been confirmed. Parks Tucker of San Angelo will judge the lambs and goats; Coby Johnson of Lubbock returns this year to judge the hogs, and Greg Jones of Post will judge the cattle.

Officers for the 2014 show season are President Cleat Stephens of Fort Davis, Vice President Becky Watley of Alpine, Treasurer Rusty Moore of Alpine and Secretary Jackie Molsbee of Alpine, who takes over for Mike Wright of Fort Davis, who served for six years in that position. Bob Dillard of Fort Davis is the association reporter.

Validation dates were set for lambs, goats and hogs. Lambs and goats will be validated from 1-3pm October 27. Lambs will be validated first, followed by goats – both activities will be in the Alpine FFA facilities west of Alpine Junior High School.

Hog validation will be Nov. 24, again from 1-3pm.

Steers were validated earlier this summer, with 21 calves validated for the local show and the major shows in Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Austin and Houston.

Of the 21 steers, 13 are from Brewster County and eight from Jeff Davis County. The nine exhibitors represent Alpine, Marathon and Fort Davis.

The association’s next meeting will be at 6:30pm October 7 at the new Big Bend Telephone Company community room on the Fort Davis Highway in Alpine. Everyone is invited to attend.
