Jeff Davis County burn ban expires, finally

August 15th, 2013 under Top Stories

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY – Two years after the devastating Rock House Fire, which burned 315,000 acres from Marfa to North of Fort Davis and destroyed over 100 structures, the Jeff Davis County Commissioners’ Court allowed the burn ban in the county to expire at an August 12 meeting.

Jeff Davis County Fire Marshal Stewart Billingsley changes the sign at the county line.

According to a spokesperson from the Jeff Davis County Tax and Sheriff’s Office, the recent rains in the area contributed to the court deciding against the renewal of the ban.

A recent post on the Fort Davis Fire Department Facebook page states that the department hopes citizens “use common sense and are careful with their fires.”

The Brewster County Commissioners’ Court also lifted their burn ban at a June 25 meeting. Presidio County remains the only one in the tri-county area with a ban in effect.
