“It was unexpected and greatly appreciated,” Ferguson said this week. In a news release from the State Bar of Texas, an organization that supports the administration of the legal system to assure that all citizens have equal access to the justice system, they said of Ferguson: “This award is not presented every year, but only when an attorney has shown extraordinary dedication to the practice of law.”

Ferguson has served on the organization’s General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section council for the past ten years.

“In my time in the council, the award was only given once in the past 10 years,” Ferguson recalled. The recognition, he says, is for someone who has made a lasting impact on Texas lawyers.

“I’ve been extremely involved at the state bar level fighting battles over the years,” he said referring to proposed disciplinary changes for lawyers, ethical rules, and malpractice insurance issues.

The State Bar of Texas boasts that it is the fifth largest organization of lawyers in the United States.

“I was happy to hear (of the award),” said Ferguson, “It was a neat surprise.”
