‘Return to Giant’ set for Dallas-area screening
DALLAS, MARFA – Friends, neighbors and Texans, on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:30pm, the historic Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff will present an encore screening of Kirby Warnock’s documentary, “Return to Giant.”
In the summer of 1955, an army of Warner Bros. crew and stars descended upon the small Texas town of Marfa to film “the national movie of Texas,” Giant. Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, Rock Hudson, and Dennis Hopper lived among the locals for nearly two months before heading back to Hollywood.

From left, Bill Matthews, June DeVolin, Joe Ligon, Lawrence Howard, Norma Matthews, Gary Darr, and Ron Mecklin.
This is the story of that special summer, with home movies and photos taken by the Marfa locals. Narrated by Don Henley, it’s, “a surprisingly haunting slice of Americana.”
A Q&A with the filmmaker follows the show.
Warnock is a Rotary Club friend of former Marfa resident Bill Matthew who recently had a mini-Shorthorn and MHS class reunion.
