Mine calls miners back to work
By ALBERTO TOMAS HALPERN
SHAFTER – Responding to an article that appeared in The Big Bend Sentinel and The Presidio International on August 2 entitled, “Shafter silver mine gets appraisal break,” Rio Grande Mining Company shed light on two aspects of the story not connected to the appraisal.
A ball mill motor used on the mine compound’s surface shorted, rather than an underground crusher breaking, as had been reported.
The August 2 story also said that many miners had been laid off. Rio Grand Mining Company General Manager Jason Cyr said that about 14 employees were laid off but were called back to work within two weeks.
Cyr added that his company is recruiting an additional 40 to 50 employees and that actual resource extraction should take place this week.
