El Cosmico music fest September 27-29
By JOHN DANIEL GARCIA
The seventh annual Trans-Pecos Gathering of Music + Love is coming soon. The three-day festival of music and good vibes has brought many highly accomplished musicians, including Led Zepplin’s legendary singer Robert Plant, to our town. This year’s festival will not be breaking its tradition.
Opening the festival on September 27 is 10-time Grammy-nominated musician and activist Meshell Ndegeocello, who will be sharing the stage with guitarist Chris Bruce.
Ndegeocello, a D.C.-based singer, bassist, and occasional rapper has released nine albums since her Maverik Records debut, 1993’s Plantation Lullabies, with her 10th studio album, “Pour une âme souveraine: A Dedication to Nina Simone” slated for release on October 9.
Ndegeocello may best be remembered for her 1994 duet with John Mellencamp- a cover of Van Morrison’s “Wild Night.” The song topped the Billboard adult contemporary chart and reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it sat in the Top 40 for 33 weeks. The single spawned a video that received heavy airplay on VH1 and will forever be remembered by many- mostly males- who were in their adolescent phase upon the video’s release.
Among the acts playing the festival this year are Ben Kweller, Brownout, and the Dixie Chicks’ Martie Maguire; as well as the usual suspects- Amy Cook, the Heartless Bastards, and Marfa’s own Hotel Brotherhood.
Other activities include the annual baseball game between Los Yonke Gallos of Marfa and Austin’s Texas Playboys. Vendors such as Filth Mart will be on site and there will be a community lunch by Frank, which includes vegetarian options.
Tickets are available at the front desk of El Cosmico and through their website. One-night tickets for music only are $25 ($20 for locals who buy at the front desk before the event) and tickets for all three nights of music are $70. Two nights of music and camping will be $95. All three nights of music and camping is $135. Registration for Saturday’s dinner is $12.
