Surviving Colorado shooting victim has Jeff Davis County ties
COLORADO, JEFF DAVIS COUNTY – Caleb Medley, a member of one of Jeff Davis County’s pioneer families, was among those critically wounded in the recent shooting in Aurora, Colorado.
Caleb sustained a head wound, which includes the loss of his right eye. He remains hospitalized in critical condition, although his doctors have expressed cautious optimism as to his recovery. Surgery is scheduled for July 31 or August 1 to repair damage to the skull, which should allow the healing process to progress more rapidly.
Caleb’s wife, Katie, who was with him at the theater, was unharmed by the shooting. Katie, who was in the final stages of pregnancy, gave birth to the couple’s son, Hugo Medley, the following day. Katie and Hugo were unharmed, at least physically, by the shooting.
Caleb works as a stand-up comic, and was just beginning to have success in his career when this tragedy occurred.
Caleb’s father, the Rev. Otis Medley, is a 1978 Fort Davis High School graduate and is now pastor of a church in Florence, Colorado.
Caleb is the great-grandson of the late longtime Jeff Davis County Sheriff Wilbur B. Medley, and the great-great-great grandson of the late Rev. Dr. W. B. Bloys. Many friends and relatives, including Jeff Davis County Attorney Bart Medley, remain in the area.
It has been estimated that medical bills for Caleb Medley may exceed $2 million. Caleb is uninsured. A fund has been set up for those who wish to donate to defray some of the costs of this tragedy. The address of the fund is:
