Shorthorns defeat Mustangs for 19th win
MARFA – The Marfa Shorthorns varsity basketball team squeaked out a 36-33 win over the Fort Hancock Mustangs at the Marfa Shorthorn Gym Tuesday night to elevate their season record to an impressive 19 wins and just one loss on the season.
It was a district game and the Purple & White are assured of play in post season with a 4-0 district record.
Compared to last week’s 59-27 romp over El Paso Harmony, Tuesday’s game was a close shave. The ponies led 6-4 after one period of play, and Marfa inched ahead 13-12 at the half.
Marfa made it a 2-point lead after three periods at 24-22, and then hung on for the win.
Shorthorns Andrew Ontiveroz and Jose Cruz paced the Marfa offense with 10 points each.
Other Marfa point-makers were Fabian Serrano with 6, and Jerram Rojo and Warren Acosta with 5 points each.
The Horns only loss of the season was to the Presidio Blue Devils. Team Marfa is coached by Alonso Samaniego.
The Horns will try to make it 20-1 and 5-0 when they challenge El Paso DaVinci in El Paso on Friday. Game time is 7:30pm, Central time.
