Lady Shorthorn volleyball season ends

MARFA, PECOS, SIERRA BLANCA – The Marfa Lady Horns’ 2011 volleyball season came to an end Tuesday night as they were defeated by Sierra Blanca 25-19, 17-25, 23-25, and 21-25 in the first round of the state playoffs.

The game was played in Pecos on a neutral court. Marfa started off strong and took down Sierra Blanca in game one and dropped the final three sets to lose the bi-district championship.

For the Lady Horns, freshman Bree’Anna Daugherty provided a spark for the team, both defensively and offensively with 4 kills, 2 blocks, 6 digs, and 2 assists.

Seniors Gabby Cataño, Kimberly Kirkpatrick, and Myra Leos each had 8 kills, 1 block, 10 digs, 3 assists, 4 aces, and Latisha Pippen had 4 kills, 3 blocks, 6 digs, 2 aces as they participated in their last high school volleyball game, and fighting off the Vaqueros in 4 tough sets.

Additionally, Yasmine Guevara, 3 kills, 15 points served, 3 digs; Codie Raby, 12 assists, 4 digs, 1 kill; Kiarra Petterson, 1 kill, 3 digs; and Jenna Conners, 4 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs, also contributed to Marfa’s hard-fought battle, bringing Marfa’s final record to 11-17 for the season.
