FOOTBALL: Alpine 35, Kermit 22
ALPINE – Oscar Trevino scored two special-teams touchdowns for Alpine, which improved its playoff chances Friday night with a 35-22 win at home against Kermit.
The Fightin’ Bucks (6-3 overall, 2-3 District 2-2A Division I) moved within one game of Kermit (5-4, 3-2) for the district’s third and final postseason berth, and because of its margin of victory would have the edge in a tiebreaker. So the Fightin’ Bucks can qualify for the postseason with a win at Denver City next week coupled with a Kermit loss against Colorado City.
Trevino gave Alpine a 14-7 lead by returning a kickoff 94 yards for a score on the last play of the first quarter, then provided the eventual winning points with a 40-yard punt return for a TD in the second quarter. Evan Moore threw two TD passes for the Fightin’ Bucks and rushed for another.
Erik Montoya scored twice and kicked a field goal for the Yellow Jackets, who also got 90 rushing yards and a touchdown pass from Joe Pearson.
